Elliott Makes the Difference

Skipper Joseph Elliott grabbed a late goal to see us beat Witham Town 1-0

A wet and windy Techsoc.com stadium saw the Motormen host high flying Witham Town.

The away side were immediately on attack, Kamani McFarlane tried a curler but the wind took the ball well wide of goal

Redbridge came forward for the first time, Henry Day's long ball down the flank to Norman Wabo who cut inside a defender but his low shot at the near post was easily gathered by keeper James Askew.

Witham looked most dangerous when the ball was at the feet of wide man Zaid Al-Hussaini , his cross was whipped across the box but failed to find a white shirt in the box.

The early pressure was coming from the away side however Redbridge broke through Malachi Napa who skipped past a Witham player before speading the play out to Wabo, his cross was partiall cleared finding the feet of Kevin Krans who only managed to fire over.

Witham continued to dominate possession however were rarely creating any chances of note, the closest chance coming from Archie McFadden who saw his first time shot saved down low by the feet of Redbridge shot stopper Samuel Nwabuko.

It was proving to be a game low on quality and chances , the real winner at this stage seemed to be the weather as both sides were finding it difficult to play in such tough conditions.

The 2nd period began with pouring rain, Nwabuko having to remain alert to turn a Witham corner behind as it looked to drop into the net.

Witham's Andrew Sesay then made space for himself but only succeeded in firing wide.

The biggest chance thus far then dropped to the home side, Napa running onto a through pass before dinking the ball over Askew only to see it drop the wrong side of the upright.

The game was now coming much more open with play being switched from end to end. , the home defence putting their bodies on the line to block several chances from Witham.

Big shouts for a penalty then followed for Redbridge , substitute Oscar Shelvey- Negus seemed to get to the ball just ahead of Askew before crashing to the ground however the referree waved away the appeals only awarding a corner.

With the game heading for a stalemate the deadlock was eventually broken, a ball was played into the path of skipper Joseph Elliott who took a touch before thundering a powerful effort into the corner of the net leaving Askew no chance.

That goal proved to the difference between the two sides as Redbridge caused a dent in Witham's title challenge.
